Nigeria's sustained economic diplomacy efforts over decades have struggled to translate into substantial improvements in trade relations. Despite persistent endeavors, the anticipated impact on trade outcomes has not been commensurate, posing significant ongoing challenges. This paper examines the impact of economic diplomacy on Nigeria’s trade relations. The paper is anchored on dependency theory as its point of departure. Data for the paper were collected through survey method. Findings reveal a notable trend of proactive engagement in promoting trade agreements and partnerships. However, empirical evidence suggests that these efforts have not consistently translated into significant measurable impacts on trade outcomes. As a result, while economic diplomacy remains a crucial tool for international engagement, its transformative effects on Nigeria's trade relations appeared constrained by both internal and external complexities. The study recommends the need for comprehensive reforms in domestic policies and regulatory frameworks to create a more conducive environment for trade and investment. This includes streamlining bureaucratic procedures, improving infrastructure, and harmonizing trade-related regulations to reduce transaction costs and enhance predictability for investors and traders alike. Secondly, the study advocate for capacity-building initiatives for diplomatic personnel involved in trade negotiations. This involves equipping them with enhanced negotiation skills, economic analysis capabilities, and a deeper understanding of global trade dynamics.
